Hey! It's the Boomdaddy here! This is my first blog post ever. And for my first blog post ever, I would like to praise William Faulkner for being the coolest writer who ever lived. This opinion is not based on any of his works of writing but his life outside of writing. He is the 'baddest' writer who ever lived.
Faulkner was always one for going his own way and doing what he wanted to do. He always 'told it how it is', even if it was blunt and plain rude. Faulkner was once invited to dinner at the White House with the First Lady Jacquelin Kennedy, but he declined because he thought it was "a long way to go just to eat." I mean, what a cool guy! Who turns down dinner with the First Lady. Not only this, but he was fired from his job as postmaster of the University of Mississippi for reading on the job. He always did whatever he wanted to do and, for that, I respect him.
I do not think I know of another writer who goes to such extremes to get what he wants. Because ehe could not fly a plane for the US military (he was too small), he goes to Canada, poses as British by adding a U to his last name (Falkner-->Faulkner), and joins the Royal Air Force. He just wanted to fly warplanes and fight in war so bad, he went to Canada. That is dedication right there.
Also, he used his writing skills to do one of the coolest jobs ever: screenwriting. He began doing this to pay the bills, but was so good at it, he signed a contract with Warner Bros. Studios in 1942 and moved to Hollywood. He regretted it, though, because he never wanted to be a screenwriter. So after three years, he left and vowed never to return to Hollywood. I admire such a guy that has the audacity to do what he did. And to be blunt and outright about his opinions just shocks me. I want to be able to do that. I want to have the courage to be able to do that.
Another reason Faulkner is so 'bad' is because he dropped out of high school and college and still was very successful in life. He was so focused on what he wanted to do in life, he did not even let school stand in his way. And to be able to drop out of school and be successful just goes to show how amazing this man was.
I admire William Cuthbert Faulkner and hope to be like him someday.
